In ord,er to proceed in an orderly fashion with the area screen–
ing and site evahlation and selection, all available information is
identified and plotted on a map of the study area. This may be.
done manually, or, in the case of very large areas, using a computer–
ized system, developed by Dames
&
MO'ore and known as
GIMS
(Geographic-based Informatíon Manegement System). This system
has the advantage of being readily updated and being ab1e to take
into account, in a short period of time, subjective judgements in
their many varia ti ons, and to evaluate the interrelationships among
aH the factors that must be studied.
It
is a very valuable tool in
the study of very large areas.
The study b¡egins with the immediate determinatíon and exc1u–
sion from further consideration of aH restricted areas, such as po–
pu1ation centers, national parkS and wildlife reservations, proximi–
ty to military installations, proximity to air travel corridors, etc.
The study proceeds with the determinatíon and evaluatÍon of
natural events, such as earthquakes and tsunamis, and of geologic
features such as faults. It continues with the determination of wa–
ter a.vailability and means of cooling water disposa1, and the deter-·
mination of meteorologic and c1imatological conditions so that the
diffusion and dispersion characteristics of the site may be determi–
ned and evaluated from the víewpoint of accidental radioactive re–
leases into the atmosphere.
Slowly, all the areas of low suitability and high public sensitivi–
ty are eliminated and a small number of candidate sites is selected
for further detailed study and the compilation of what is -known
as
PSAR
(Preliminary Safety Analysis Report), to eventuaHy be fO–
llowed by an
FSAR
(Final Safety Ana1ysis Report) and licensing by
the regulato!y lagency.
