NUCLEAR INTERESTS IN THE CARIBBEAN
THE
VALUE OF NUCLEAR SCIENCE
As you welI know the value of nuclear science and technology ex–
tends far beyond the generatíon of power. 1 need not attempt to
list the many possible applications to this audience, aH 1 want to
do now is to give a description of what we are doing in Jamaica
and what we hope to do.
THE
ADMINISTRATION OF NUCLEAR
WORK
IN JAMAICA
There is not yet a central body responsible for nuclear work in
Jamaica. However, a body designated "THE COMMITTEE ON PEACEPUL
USES OF THE AToM" has been formed to coordinate work in the
island and a smalI Central Radioiso-tope Laboratory has started
work. 1 am presentIy Chairman of that Committee. lts members in–
elude University and Government Scientists and Administrators and
niembers of the business community.
Most nuclear work is done within the University although some
¡sotopic sources are used in industry.
SUMMARY OF JAMAICAN INTERESTS

Use of isorapes in Jamaica
l. MEDICINE
The best established use of isotopes in Jamaica is in the ficId of
nedical science. Standard

Co sources are used for radiation the–

work and research.

HYDROCEOLOCIC INVESTIGATIONS
Work has concentrated mainly on naturally occuring radioactive
and stable isotopes viz 3H,
