Shell oblong, narrow abovc, ancl widcly expandcd below; with about fifty narrow, slightly elevated ribs, with a groovc in the centre of each, the interveniug furrows provided with a nnrrow, single, less elevntcd rib ; lhe whole of the ri_bs covered with obtusc, imbricatecl scales; colour varying from ycllowish- orange to cinnabar-red, ami dark browu. Dead shells of this species are common in the Clydc ami Kyles of Bute, but we only once met with a pair of vah·es united. Large specimens, mensuring four inches and a quarler in lenglh, were obtained by Henry Gore Booth, Esq., in the north ell(I of the West Kyle. 5. PECTEN VARIUS, pi. XXIV, f. 4. Length two incites ami a quarter; brcadth two inches, Somctimes shells of this spccies are quite plain, ,·arying in colour fro1n deep orange to dark purplish-brown, sométimes purc white. Shell nearly circular, thc umbones acule; with sevcn broad, flat, unequal, divergent ribs; auricles unequal; externa! surfacc of both valvcs covercd with very fine, parallel, longitudinal strim, and also with very minute, undulating, transverse strim, which are hardly discernible to the naked eyc, but fcel rough to the touch; both valves somcwhat innated towards their base, with a series of longitudinal, densely-sct ribs, ancl the basal rnargins fincly crenulatecl two-thirds of the b readth of thc shell; upper, or co1wex valve, of a uniform rich reddish-brown, irregularly clouded with whitc ; under valvc generally ash- coloured, allCI immaculatc; inside bluish-white, of a pearlaceous lustre, exhibiting iridescent rellcctions. Length one inch and seven-eighths; breadth the samc. First found at Largs, mouth of thc Clyde, by Mr. John Blythe, of Glasgow. It has since becn found in Loch Fine, by Mr. Drew, Writer, lnverary; and I obtained it from Miss 1-Ielen Carmichael, who found it on thc shores of the larger Combrie Island, Frith of Clyde.
