Thc late Rev. Dr. Goodall, Provost of Eton Collcge, found this very clegant species at extreme low wnter-mark, on a stone at Tor Abbey rocks. In his spccimcn the valves wcre of a clark livcr-colourcd brown, with a double spot of pale green on each ; thc trans\'Crse striro, which pro- duce thc shagreened appearancc, were exceedingly minut~. He had mistaken it for the C. la:vis. The magnificent spcc1- mcn from which fig. 15 as wcll as fig. 12 wcrc drawn, were dis- covered at Oban, Argyleshirc, ancl prcsented to me by my late friend Captain Charles Carmichael, an accuratc and zealous naturnlist. 6. Shell carinated; valves broad, quite smooth, polishecl, and shining, deslitutc of punctures or granulations, but with numc- rous, rather faint, irregular, transversc striro, or linos of growth, which are more determínate on the sidcs of the valves, wherc thcy are longitudinal; margin broad, with irrcgularly granose, or farina-likc dots; whole surfacc with biight recldish-brown, or burnt sienna-colourcd clouds, spols, or undulations; marginal fringe of a light red-colonr, all(I not vcry clistinct; midel le valves providcd with two marginal teeth; first valve with nine teeth, ami thc terminal one with ten. Length threc-eighths of an inch; brcaclth about a quarter. Lcngth nearly thrce-quartcrs of an inch; breaclth about five-eighths. Fonnd adhcring to oysters in thc Frith of Forth; ami undcr stoncs, at vcry low water, at Crammoncl, Ircland. 10. Shell oval, white; with thc valvcs but little raiscd, short in proportion to their brcaclth, ami vcry slightly pointccl; wholc surface co\'crcd with minute puncturcs; border ralhcr dusky, with dccussatcd strim, proclucing a fine shagreen-likc appear- ance, when vicwed through a strong lens, and cleslitutc of a fringe on its edgc. Lcngth thrcc-eighths of a11 inch; breadth somewhat lcss. Found on oystcrs in the Frith of Forth, and at P oole, Dor- sctshirc, and is invariably a decp water spccies. 11. CHITON AsELLus, pi. Shell subcarinated; valves slightly beakcd, covered with moniliform, or chain-like granulations, dispose'd in the forro of longitudinal, slightly obliquc stri,c; marginal ligamcnt rathcr broad, with black, shagrecn-likc granulations, and providcd with a slight fringc; thc wholc of thc valves destitutc of marginal teeth, but with thcir interna! edges minut.cly crenulatccl, or granuloso ; colour variable, sometimos chocolate-brown, and at others olive-green. Length about three-eighths of au inch; brcaclth somcwhat more than a c¡uartcr. Lowc says, "in young specimens thc posterior edges of thc valves are dark brown, or black, which extends over about half the valvc; in older shells this colour becomes clecper, ancl cx- tencls graclually over thc whole of that part of cach vah·c, which is covered by the prcccding as thc shell contracts in drying." Fig. 14 is a grcatly magnified figure of a specimen, scnt to me by Captai11 Carmichacl, in which thc val ves are green, ami the bordcr brown.
