Shell white, pellucid, smooth, glossy; body occupying about half thc lcngth of thc shell; spire tapcr, consisting of fivc ncarly tlat-sidcd volutions, well defincd · by the suture; aperturc oblong-ovate, subtruncated at thc base; outer lip thin, cvcn; pillar lip thickened, and a little reílected on the columella. Lcngth a quarter of an inch ; and hardly a fourth of its length in diametcr. This species is not uncommon in many parts of Grcat Britain ancl Ireland. It inhabits the roots of grass and trees, cspccially where thcre are limcstone rocks; plcntiful in Barham Downs, Kent; Lackham, Wiltshire; and at Miltown Malbay, in thc nnighbourhood of Dublin; La Bergerie, Queen's County; Castlc Martyr, near Cork; ancl at Dromana, County of Water- forcl, by Miss M. Ball of Dublin. GENUS 47.-Buu~tus,-Lamarck. Shell oval, or oblong, generally thin, and covered with a slender epidermis ; spire obluse, variable in length, and in the 1111111ber of its volutions, which for the mosl part are fcw; aper- tnre ovni, wide, nnferiorly roun<led; outer lip simple, reílecte<l, continuons, and joining the columella withoul an emargination; columella smooth, straight, without a truncature, or widening at the base. l. This specics can only be clistinguishe<l from the B. montanus by its inferior size, its white lip, ami in its volutions bcing some- what more inílatcd. ,Found amongst moss in moisl ,places, under stones, an<l ou old walls, and also on rocks; in which last locality we founcl soq¡c fine specimens near Sunderland. • I found a very <listinct rariety of this species in the limestone quarry on the top of the East Lomon<l hill, Fifcshirc, an<l name<l it B. brevis, pi. Length somewhat more than lh-c-cighths of an rnch; and a quarter of an inch in diameter. Found at Lackham, in Wiltshire, by Colonel Montagu; mcl with sparingly in the debris of Salisbury Crags, at Edinburgh; an<l I found it at Castle Willan, near Maryborough, Quecn's County; an<l in the <lebris of the mountains of Mournc, Ireland.
