Shell conical, nearly smooth; wilh six unequal valves, longi- t udinally wrinkled, and Yery remole, nearly obsolete stri.o on the raised portions ; aperture 1•ery large, exlremely irregular on the edge, inlernally slriatc transvcrsely; operculum abruptly conical; posterior valvcs with serrated externa! margins, and zlriatcd t ransversely; anterior Yalves with numerous, strong, transverse ribs, which are crossed by many fine, longituclinal ;;triro, producing a decussatcd appearance, ancl with their inter- na! margins serrated. Fig. 11, 12, the operculum. Fig. 8 is an elongate<l, cylindrical variely, found on the Devonshire coast, by Dr. Lcach. The species seems very variable in form. This is the largest specics of Balanus found in our seas, ami seems pretty widely cliffusccl. Fig. 10 was founcl by W. C. Trevelyan, Esq., at Hartlepool, adhering to a specimen of Fusus cmtiqims. Fig. 9 was figuree! from a spccimen in the British Museum, and clreclged in the Frith of Forth, where it is not uncommon; and I have lately procurecl sorne large and beautiful specimens from the Irish coast. 6. Shell conic; vah•es pointed at the apcx; compartments ob- scure, the thrce posterior ones larger thnn the others; whole surface longituclinnlly striated, and slightly so transverscly, pro- ducing a reticulatecl nppcarance, :md of a palc reclclish-pnrple colour; aperturc very small. Diamcler nt the base abont three-eighths of an inch. Found at \Veymouth, by Mr. Ilryer, attachecl to a specimcu of Pentelasmis la:vis. This is probably a foreign species. 10. BALANUS MoNTAGu1, pi.
