Shell laterally compressecl, conical, and composed of fivc va\vcs, held together by a membraneous, ligamentary proccss; lowcr valves the largest, of a subtrigonal form, a little convex, and acule at their anterior base; upper lateral pair elongated, and subquaclrate, dorsal one lanccolate, carinatcd, and arcuated; scated 011 a peduncle, which is of variable lcngth. l. Shell compressed, of a bluish-white, aml vcry glossy ; two lower valves somewhat triangular, longitudinally wrinkled, with nearly obsolctc stri.c, ra<lialing from thc lowcr interior anglo; two superior valves clongated, and tapcring to an obtusc point, upper portion angulated on bolh sides, apex rounded, thcsc have likcwise obsolctc, radiating striro, and are longitudinally wrinkled from the upper posterior anglc; dorsal valve long, slender, arcuated, smooth clown the micl<llc, ancl sulcnted on the sides; connecting cartilage and pedunclc of a reddish- orange, frequently inclining to scarlet, the lntler cxtremcly variable in length, as will be seen from thc dilferent specimens figurcrl; in a solitary inslance, we met with it of a pale hrow11, as in flg. l. Found attached to picccs of rotten wood, on many of the British ancl Irish coasts, and is the most common specics of the genus.
