CLASS TH IRD. CIRRIPEDA. Thc animals are soft, destitutc of a head, and consequently of eyes; covercd with a shell, and are incapablc of locomotion, being always affixcd to cxtraaeous bodic~. T hc whole of thc Cirripedes are mult1valvc; that is, cousist- ing of more than two pieces, or valves. ORDER L-PEDUNCULATA. Body supported on a tubular, membranaceous, movcable ~c- <luncle, the base of which is affixe<l to stoncs and othcr marine bodies, or timbcr floating in thc occan. GENUS 1-ÜTION,-Lcach. Body of thc animal subquadrate, placed on a fleshy pedunclc, with :m ovatc, wi<lc apcrturc, for thc passage of thc ciliated ten- tacula, surmounted by two auriform processes ; shell concealed, and composcd of five widcly separatcd, bielden valves; two scmilunate oncs situatc al thc lowcr sides of the apcrture, two vcry small terminal, two very small oncs placed on each side of a small fissurc at the top of the aperture, and a dorsal very minuto 011c. l. Animal _with n quadratc body, scatcd on a flcshy pcdunclc, co1·cred w1th n membranaceous epidermis; an aperture in front for the passage of the ciliatcd tentacula; immecliately ovcr this are a pair of small clongatcd valvcs, placed nearly horizontal. two tr_iparlitc vah-es situate just below thc aperturc, one 0 ~ ~ach s1de, :md placed ncarly pcrpendicularly, and an angulated, keel-shaped, dorsal valve, but these do not cover the body. l. Vm·iety b, f. 1 7, Found on the coast of '\-Vales, and has been met with on the Forfarshire coast, near Montrose. 2. CINERAS AURITA, pi. LI, f. 19, Oineras atwita, First Ed., pi. 1, f. 19; L epas au,·ita, Brown, Ency. Brit., VI, p. 404. Peduncle and whole externa! membranc greenish ash-colour- cd, with three longitudinal lines of black; two short, roundcd, auriform, blunted processcs behind. Differs from thc preceding species in being devoid of white markings, and probably only a variety of that shell. Found at Plymout.h. GENUS 3.-PoLLlCIPES,-Leach. Bo<ly co1•cred by a shell, and supported by a tubular, tcndi- nous, squamifcrous peduncle, which seldom exceeds two inches in length; shell multivalve, comprcssed on the sidcs, with the valves nearly contiguous ancl unequal; valves thirtecn or more in number, those on the sides smallest ; fi ve upper valves much larger than thc others; thc anterior pair conical, elongated, with their sides reflected backwards, situate on each side of the opening; the central, or terminal pair largcst, and trapcziform, with an acule angle al the posterior cxlremity; dorsal vah•e grcatly elongalecl, broad al the base, rounded in the back, with an acute apex; betwcen these, in thc pcdunclc, are a number of smaller, testaceous, generally triangular studs. 1.
