Shell trans,·ersely elongated, thin, pellucicl, much compressecl, :tll(l flc:rnous ; anterior sicle narrowed ami obliquely subtrun- cated, opposite sitie well rounclecl; umbones vcry small, nearly central, with a slight inclination to the cartilage side; colour generally white or pale yellow, frec¡uently with a deeper tinge towards thc umbones, ami often exhibiting iriclescent reílections; the left ,·ah·e with very fine, regular, longitudinally diagonal stri.u, oblic¡uing from the superior portion of the posterior side towards the base; the right rnh-e quite plain, or with remole, irregular, concentric, obsolete stri.x:; hinge with three teeth in the left vah·e, one of which is lateral, but not ,•ery remote from the cardinal ones; the right valve with only two cardinal teeth; inside smooth, glossy, white, with generally a darker tinge towards the hinge; margins plain, and very sharp. This shell is liable to some variety, the diagonal stri.:c in vari- ous specimens only reaching a liltle more than half way along the posterior sicle. Distinguished from T. tcnuis, by its more lengthened ami more acute anterior side, ancl especially by the left. valve being <liagonally striate. Shell strong, thick, convex, suborbicular; anterior side a little produce<l into a subacute beak, 011 which sicle the line from thc umbo clownwards is considerably more parallel than the othcr, and with a widc, longitudinal dcpression; posterior side well rounded; umbones placed uearly central, :md rather blunted, hardly turning to either si<le; exterior surface dull, of various colours, yellowish-white, yellow, citron, ílesh-colour, ami ro~y red; some plain, others bandecl or zoned; hinge with two small teeth in both rnlves; inside glossy, all(I of the same colonrs a~ the exterior, but the tints in general more l'Í\·id. Somctimes measures an inch in length; and :m inch ancl a qnarler in breadth. Inhabits most of the coasts of Dritain ancl Irelall(l, ami bur- rows in sand four or five inches beneath the surfacc. 11. General length about half an inch ; breadth three-quarters. This is one of the most benutiful of our British bivah·es, nml inhabits sancly shores.
