CIAE Centro de Investigación Avanzada en Educación: 10 años 2008-2018

3 Education is the greatest challenge for the construction of our future as a nation. Economic growth, social integration, the richness and quality of our culture and our democratic life depend on how we solve the main issues affecting our school and higher education systems. Indeed, quality education ‘holds a treasure’, as stated by Jacques Delors in his famous report more than two decades ago: the treasure of being able to make people and society grow. This is much more valid today, as the speed of change and the role of knowledge in the development of people’s capacities have intensified. The Center for Advanced Research in Education (CIAE) was born in 2008, seeking to provide an interdisciplinary and integrative perspective, allowing a fruitful dialogue among researchers from different areas of knowledge. Educators, sociologists, economists, engineers, mathematicians, physicians and psychologists, from different faculties and institutes of the University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, the University of Concepción and the University of O’Higgins, participate in the Center. Our main objective is to contribute to the understanding of the educational challenges and their complexities; as well as to produce relevant and rigorous knowledge to improve the quality and equity of Chilean education. We also seek to promote postgraduate programs in education and, through the Programa Transversal de Educación of the Universidad de Chile, to collaborate with teacher education programs. Furthermore, we aim to articulate research networks with national and foreign universities and academic centers, and to be a communication focal point for academics, education stakeholders and policy makers. During these first ten years, CIAE has been successful in identifying and attracting excellent researchers, offering them an environment where academic work is valued and promoted. This has allowed us to enhance and deepen our knowledge, generate a space for reflection on educational issues and develop a virtuous link with the educational system. We begin this new decade with the institutional strength of belonging to the new Institute of Advanced Studies in Education at the University of Chile. This has given CIAE a clear institutional affiliation and the academic identity necessary for its development. Our commitment is to continue working to stimulate the dialogue among researchers, and between them and educational stakeholders, policy and society.
