The TIRI NETWORK builds and empowers networks of professionals, activists,
policy–makers and constitutional office holders. Its long–term goal is to help
counter corruption by assisting in the building and remodelling of institutions
and practices.
At the heart of The Tiri Network’s mission lie three core objectives: to improve
governance in both public and private institutions, to deepen access and to
increase learning for effective corruption control. The Tiri Network emphasises
the processes and strategies required to attain just, responsive and open
institutions that deliver just and honest government to all citizens.
The Tiri Network is a not–for–profit organisation designed as a response to this
third and latest phase. Incorporated at the end of 2003, it will work with partners
and others in a growing global network of specialists, academics, institutions
and organisations. It shares high levels of expertise and insight, based on access
to, and participation in, the latest and most promising anti–corruption strategies.
The Tiri Network and its partners commit to working collectively and individually
to raise integrity standards everywhere, and in both public and private
institutions, in the belief that by so doing successfully they will assist processes
of sustainable development and the reduction of poverty.
The Tiri Network was founded by two of the founding members of Transparency
International (TI). Jeremy Pope was TI’s founding managing director, and Fredrik
Galtung its director of research. The pair were the creators of much of TI’s
intellectual property and its strategic approaches. Both are well–known and
highly–respected throughout the international anti–corruption movement.
With the encouragement and support of others who share the same
convictions, they have created The Tiri Network out of the recognition that
the time for awareness raising has now moved on to the determined reduction
and control of corruption by the application of practical knowledge and skills.
The time has arrived for the fostering of a broad–based, global movement
against corruption with the high degree of professionalism needed to address
the coming challenges of reform.
The Tiri Network is developing a work programme in close collaboration with
key institutions and personalities throughout the anti–corruption movement
and this is being carefully tailored to meet the needs they have felt and
expressed. It is greatly assisted in this as Messrs Pope and Galtung bring to
the new organisation their own global networks.
