Stiles, in a study that he prepared on Ganada, Korea and the Pacific Rim in 1976: "It ls our hope and expectation that the mix of future Canadian exports to the region will contaln an increasing pereentage of manufactured goods. It would be wrong .to assume that Canada will remain satisfied with the role of primarily being a resource produeer and that we should leave it to others - principally Japan - to produce sophisticated manufaetured goods and even to up-grade raw resourees. Tbis, frankly. ls not the kind of future we see for Canada. Rather. we would hope for more eooperative arrange– ments such as joint ventures, investment in manufacturing facilities in each other's country. and possibly contraet growing for food needs on a long– tem¡ basis". 94
