Desarrollo de la Antártica

EL DESARROLLO DE LA ANTART1CA the tAntarctic coast and in the surrounding Antarctic Ocean can be outlined by combining Fig. 15 with. 13 and 14. Althoug,h the ecosystem of Antarctic lives seems to be comparatively simple, rather little has been known to date about the quantitative aspects of structure and function of ecosystem and the biomass of Antarctic lives, because Antarctica is too big to be biologically studied in detail at presento For example, the biomass of squids in die Ant– arctic Otean has been very little known and the population sensus of animalson the fast-ice ____ pack-ice zone has not yet been sufficiently made except for seals. Very little is known also on tihe life history of Antarctic lives in the Southern winter season, t,hough I:!heir sum– mer life histories are more or less brough up to our knowle~. c) Antarctic Huma.n Biology and M.edicine The human biology and medicine in Antarctica are being gradually systematized, since a number of people are spending the wintering over life at many Antarctic stations on thoses days. 'The Antarctic human biology including the human physiology and rpsychology slhould be a very broad scientific subject to be studied exactly and in detail for the purpose of development of utilization of Antarctica in the future. In this review report, only scientific topics taken up in a symposium on "Human Biology and Medicine in tille Antarctic" held in 1972 under the auspices of SCAR, IUPS (Intemational Union of Phys"iolOigy) and IUBS (International Union of Biological Sciences) will be introduced. It is because the titles of human biological papers presented to this Symp'osium can well demonstrate what are significant research ítem in this particular branch of Antarctic sciences. Those titles are as follows: - Australian physiologicaI research in the lAntar, ctic and Sulbantarctic witJh special reference to thermal stress and acclimatizatlon (authoTed by Budd). - The main trends of ISoviet medical investigations in Antarctica (Tikhomirov) . - Review of medical research performed in the French Antarctic territories (Rivolier). - Review of medical research at the Japanese station (Syowa) in tne Antarctic (Yoshimura). - Medical problems encountered in French Antarctic missions; the value and methods of selection (Doury and Pattin). 118
