When we examined the petroleum prospects oE some 70 oH LDCS, we fonnd that only 20 ha:d what ve caBed "high" estimated amounts of ultl!"lla.te recoverable reserven (over 750 million barreIs), while the "tnljority had only "fair" or "low". 1 believe private industry may ver y well show lnterest in the first group but there are serious doubts regarding the feasibility of attracting it to the other less promising co– untries. Nevertheless, it is very important for the deve10pment pros– pccts of these countries that their resources also be explored. 1t is for these that perhaps some form of petroleum exploration fund using public resources may in time be found essential. 170
