Corea, perspectivas desde América Latina: IV encuentro de estudios coreanos en América Latina

Corea y sudamérica en ÚJs inicios de! s. XIX fruto del accionar de las ideas ilustradas, ha servido de estímulo para ampliar los horizontes culturales de los habitantes del "viejo mundo" y prueba de esto son las reiteradas ediciones de los diarios de viajes y las notas de edición: ''El cambio que ha ido teniendo lugar gradualmente los últimos treinta o cuarenta años en el numero y las circunstancias del publico lector, y el deseo ilimitado de conocimiento que ahora domina todas las clases de la sociedad, han sugerido emprender el presente libro" (Hall, 1824a). Antes, el conocimiento estaba limi– tado a las clases más altas, que privilegiaban en mayor medida la forma que el contenido, pero la masificación del conocimiento explica no solo las numero– sas reimpresiones, sino que también es un aliciente para la consolidación de ediciones más asequibles como la de Archibald Constable en 1824. A partir de 10 analizado en ambos textos podemos rescatar algunas ideas que nos permiten comparar la posición de Corea y Latinoamérica, pudiendo establecer un nivel de similitud entre ambas del mismo modo en que 10 hace el Capitán Hall (1824a: 100-101) en el siguiente fragmento: We neednotlookso far, perhaps, as the coasts ofthe Yellow Sea, to be convinced how slowly nations arrive at enlightened ideas on the subject of external relatíons, as there are not wanting individuals, and perhaps whole countries in Europe, who still maintain this repulsive Corean sys– tem to be the wisest. And it might be curious to trace on the globe diffe– rent steps or shades of liberality in this respecto Beginning with Corea and Tapan, the least sociable of aH nations, we next come to China, the commercial resources of which mighty empire are dribbled sparingly off at the solitary port of Cantono Manilla, which is strictly ruled by the principIes of the Spanish colonial system, is but a single degree better. Proceeding to the westward we come to Java, where the restrictions and monopolies of the Dutch are still felt, though oflate somewhat modified. When the Straits of Sunda are passed, a nobler field ofview is opened in British India, the Isle ofFrance, the Cape, and still farther westward, the free continents of South and North America. After again crossing the Trade-winds, we come wíthin the influence of English intelligence on both sides of the Atlantic; though even in these latitudes we may perhaps detect some anomalous vies of the subject quite worthy of Corea.
