La protección del medio ambiente y el desarrollo del Derecho Internacional mediante convenios multilaterales José Manuel Ovalle Sustainable development is a goal not only for deve10ping countries but also for industrialized ones. The Vienna Convention to protect the Ozone laycr and the Montreal Protocol and its amendments as weU as the measures adopted to control non nuclear dangerous wastes, are examples of this preocupation. In 1969, under the sponsorship of UNEP, the Convention to control transboun– dary movements of hazardous wastes and their removal, anticipated the adop– tion of new instruments regarding the biodiversity and climate change. The phenomena considered by tbese conventions are closely related to mining activities. The diplomatic and legal agenda ofthe United Nations Conference on Environ– ment and Development held in June 1992, contributed to the establishment oc, a new environmental order. In tbis context, the national mining sector wiU bave an opportunity to test its virtue to lead a sustainable development process.
