The collection includes a mystery, that of the little red box, some kind of suitcase, with some small shells, each one separately ordered and framed, forming a grid on each side, in whose interior one can find beautiful arrangements of one or several shells. But the mystery of its origins remains. Where does it come from? Was it a gift? Whose gift was it? The selection of pieces accompanying this book considered the most important specimens for Neruda’s poetry, the most significant in the creation of his collection, the seashells portrayed in verses from books like: Canto General (1950), Oceana (1951), Tidal Wave (1970), and in testimonies written by the poet himself or by close friends connected to this collection. It also considered those that are polished, those with a tag written by the poet, extinct species, invader species, and some of the larger specimens in the collection. Note: If one notices some difference between the names quoted by Neruda in his poetry and those printed by the photographs, it’s because scientific names are in constant study, revision and change. 36 universidad de chile
