Proceedings of the 12th International INQUA meeting on paleoseismology, active tectonic and archaeoseismology

150 PATA Days 2024 The site of Estanzuela is located along the 1976 earthquake rupture just west of theHighwayCA10 roadoffset near Zacapa in central Guatemala. We collected 3 ERT lines (Fig. 6). Two short 24 m-long lines cross the north boundary of the sag. One is located west of a paleoseismic trench and the other one parallels the trench. A third ERT line with a length of 75 m was located east of the trench. The data paralleling the trench show a distinct vertical resistivity discontinuity which is interpreted as the location of the Motagua fault that juxtaposes different rock types. The upper meter is dominated by a low resistivity zone that correlates to the sediment of the sag pond. Fig. 6: Map showing the location of ERT lines and a paleoseismic trench at the north margin of the Lagunetas Los Yajes sag pond on the property of a melon packing plant. Fig. 7: ERT profile at Estanzuela along the trench showing a sharp resistivity change at depth and a south-dipping low resistivity zone within the sag pond.
