T H E G R I N D AV Í K G R A B E N Grabens are a major outcome of extensional tectonics but yet rarely observed during formation. Iceland is an extensional plate boundary where a mid-oceanic ridge comes onshore (Clifton and Kattenhorn, 2006; Arnadottir et al., 2008). Although several eruptions took place during 2021-2023 unrest, only during a major earthquake sequence did permanent ground deformation take place with the rupture of a system of normal faults and fissures (Fig. 1). Seismicity during this period was also coincident with the fault slip and shown for the period of 25 October until 17 November.
