Esto es Humberstone hoy. En medio del Norte Grande de Chile, en la Pampa del Tamarugal, apenas queda el recuerdo de un período de esplendor. De aquí salió el sustento de todo el país a fines del siglo XIX y comienzos del siglo XX. Todo se lo llevó el tiempo, el sol y la sequedad del desierto. This is Humberstone today. In the heart of Chile’s northern desert, in the Pampa del Tamarugal, only the memories of a prosperous period remain. This place provided the livelihood for the entire country at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. But time, sun, and the dryness of the desert have taken it all away. Después de años de saqueo, se ha restaurado esta ciudadela creada en 1870. En su mejor época producía salitre y yodo que se embarcaba para todo el mundo en el puerto de Iquique. Por aquí pasaron varios propietarios. El señor Wendell, peruano, The London Nitrate Co. y la Cia. Salitrera de Chile. Nada pudieron hacer compitiendo con fertilizantes sintéticos. En Santa Laura se producían 100 toneladas de salitre por día. Eso dice un folleto. Es mucho. ¿Será cierto? After years of looting, this citadel created in 1870 has been restored. In its heyday , it produced saltpeter and iodine, which were shipped worldwide from the port of Iquique. Several owners passed through here: Mr. Wendell from Peru, The London Nitrate Co., and the Saltpeter Company of Chile. However, they couldn’t compete with synthetic fertilizers.
