Santa Laura apaga sus máquinas y fuegos en 1960. Vivían 450 trabajadores que, con sus familias, llegarían a más o menos 1.000 habitantes. Había 150 casas, 59 habitaciones de solteros, filarmónica, baños públicos, policlínico y escuela. Más allá no hay nada, solo la inmensidad del desierto. Bajo estas precarias, secas y pobres celosías de madera debió tocar la orquesta los domingos y festivos. Por aquí pasearon las familias y se encontraron las parejas. De alguna forma traían agua para los árboles (que hoy son cadáveres) y estas sombras cobijaban la vida de la salitrera. Los lugares de esparcimientos están en el borde.
